I haven't always been against winter weather. In fact, I can remember loving snow days as a kid. We'd spend the entire day sledding, building snow forts, and drinking hot chocolate.

Every time that it snows, I'm reminded of the time that my brother and I decided to buld a snow man on grandpa's front porch. We worked under the cover of darkness and quietly rolled snow balls into the biggest balls of snow we could. Then we hoisted each section onto Grandpa's wooden porch and assembled the pieces. We didn't worry about eyes or a carrot nose or arms, our snowman didn't need any of those things to accomplish the mission.

After a quick pause to admire our work, my brother and I hid in the bushes a few yards from Grandpa's front door. We took time to build up a supply of hard-packed snowballs. We had everything we needed to pull a good one off on Grandpa all we needed to do now was get his attention. The first volley of snowballs hit right on target creating loud thuds as they hit the front door.

The snow continued to fly until we saw the door open. Out came Grandpa and he wasn't happy. He stood out on the porch staring at the snowman and yelling for us to remove it now! Doug and I Stayed behind the bushes laughing and the more we laughed, the madder he got. The madder he got, the more we laughed.

Finally the standoff ended when Grandpa went inside to fulfill his threat of calling our dad. As soon as the door closed, we were off the ground running as fast as possible back home, laughing the whole way.

We came charging into the house, wet and cold, just as Dad was hanging up the phone. Dad took one look at us and knew that we were guilty and we were certain that there would be a price to pay for our prank. Then, Dad cracked a smile that broadened until he broke into a full belly-laugh.

The "price" of our prank was that we had to get up early the next morning to remove the snowman from Grandpa's porch. As started removing the snowman, we started laughing once again, and placed the snowman right outside of Granpa's backdoor.

Maybe snow days aren't so bad after all.
